Abstract
Purpose; Chronic Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes long lasting inflammation and ulcers on the walls of colon. It affects the deeper linings of the intestines and rectum. It is characterised by Diarrhoea, often with blood and mucus, abdominal pain, urgency to defecate, fatigue and loss of weight. Ayurveda and Siddha classical preparations provide comprehensive solution to the chronic illness. Besides, the significant relief from the signs and symptoms the medicines provide a complete recovery from the illness. This is a clinical study to evaluate the combined therapeutic efficacy of Ayurveda and Siddha Classical preparations viz. Kalasakadi kasayam, Tayirsunti churnam tablets,Vilwadi gutika, Sangu parpam tablets and Dadimashtaka churnam in the management of Chronic Ulcerative Colitis and the associated ailments. Method; This clinical trial was carried out at Viswanath Ayurvedic Hospital, Shengottai. In this clinical study 8 patients from either sex were randomly selected from the Out Patient Department who were associated with a history of Chronic Ulcerative Colitis were administered with the trial drugs viz, Kalasakadi kasayam, Tayirsunti churnam tablets,Vilwadi gutika, Sangu parpam tablets and Dadimashtaka churnam for a period of six weeks . Laboratory and Radiological investigations were carried out to ascertain the condition of the patients. The treatment progress and results observed were documented periodically. The assessments were made based on the subjective and objective parameters. Results After six weeks of treatment 6 out of 8 patients (75%) had complete recovery from the major signs and symptoms of the disease. The rest of 2 patients (25%) had relief from bleeding, mucus stools and abdominal pain excepting occasional frequent stools. The results proved that the trial drugs were beneficial in the management of Chronic Ulcerative Colitis providing full recovery from the illness. Besides relieving the signs and symptoms the drugs helped to restore the normalcy in the patients afflicted with chronic Ulcerative Colitis.
