Abstract
Allergic Asthma-Tamaka swasa is a most distressing common disease affecting a sizable number of world population. Internal and external allergens such as environmental change, pollutants and unsuitable food are believed to be the predisposing factors to these ailments. They sensitize the immune system of the body and trigger production of the antibody Immunoglobulin E [IgE] which bind to mast cells and basophils containing histamine. This results in sneezing, running nose, irritation of eyes, inflammation of nasal passage and bronchial mucosa, increased mucus production and wheezing. The pathogenesis and management are well explained in Ayurvedic Classics. Ayurveda refers to bronchial asthma as Tamaka Swasa and it contributes to several modalities of the treatment for Tamaka Swasa .Among all the modalities of treatment, polyherbal combinations such as Dasamoolakatuthrayam kwatha, Vyoshadi vatakam ,Swasanandam gutika and Swasa kalpa are clinically proven to have anti allergic effect on the ailment and are said to be well-accepted, safe and effective in asthma. They relieve bronco spasm, airway block, sneezing and running nose. These formulations have been widely used by our ayurvedic physicians in Bronchial Asthma-Tamaka Swasa. This study is aimed at proving the efficacy of these formulations in Allergic Asthma. It was a single blind, clinical study on patients diagnosed with Allergic Asthma. A total of 38 patients of either sex ranging from age of 4 to 48 were the subject of the study to assure the clinical response of Dasamoolakatuthrayam kwatha, Vyoshadi vatakam ,Swasanandam gutika and Swasa kalpa in bronchial asthma (Tamaka Swasa) at Viswanath Ayurvedic Hospital,Shengottai. The trial medicines reduced the absolute eosinophil and TIgE count and had significant antiallergic, antihistaminic, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, bronco dilatation with an overall reduction in the symptoms of Allergic Asthma in the patients studied.
