Abstract
Purpose; Gastritis is one of the most common and distressing ailments of gastro intestinal tract that affect a sizable number of world populations. It is characterized by pain, nausea, vomiting, belching, loss of appetite, indigestion and bloating of abdomen resulted from the inflammation of the gastric mucosa. It is referred as Gulma in Ayurveda which is managed well with sodhana (purification) and samana (palliative) measures. This clinical trial is aimed at the evaluation of the therapeutic efficacy of classical ayurvedic formulations viz., Vaisvanara curnam, Bhaskara lavanam and Lasunadi vati in patients with gulma. Methods; It is a single blind, clinical study on patients diagnosed with gastritis. A total of 28 patients of either sex ranging from 30-80 of age were taken for the study. All the patients were subjected to the thrividha(3 fold), ashtasthana pareeksha ( 8 fold examination )and dasavidha pareeksha (10 fold examination). All the 20 patients were administered the trial drugs viz., Vaisvanara curnam, Bhaskara lavanam and Lasunadi vati.and the progress was observed. The observations were recorded based on subjective and objective methods. Results; Results concluded that the trial medicines showed antispasmodic, carminative, digestive and laxative therapeutic properties which helped in relieving the pain, belching, flatulence, constipation and dyspepsia. At the end of the clinical trial, complete remission in 24 patients (86%) and improvement in the rest of 4 patients (14%) was observed. Conclusions; The study vividly indicates the therapeutic efficacy of the trial drugs in the management of gulma or gastritis, relieving almost all the signs and symptoms. The drugs are quite safe, de voiding of any ill effects and ensure well being of the patient affected by gulma.
